General Update

I haven’t posted very much to this site since I launched it. I've been making updates and refinements to the resume and portfolio pages, but haven’t made any blog posts. (With the exception of the Pather Problem which hadn't been officially posted at the time I began writing this post.) I figured I should post a general update about what is going on with me.

For eight months now I've been working in a call center. I've grown accustomed to working there and my pay is almost as much as some of my previous entry level web development jobs. The pay and flexibility has me putting a hold on looking for immediate software development work. I’ll eventually get back to it, but in the meantime I’m taking the opportunity to accomplish some other goals of mine.

One thing I attempted was to try my hand at freelancing. A friend of mine said that I’m skilled enough to be able to juggle and successfully complete multiple small jobs at one time. It’s a venture I've contemplated before but never really followed through on. My biggest problem with a venture of this type is my personality. I’m very asocial, keep a very small circle of friends, and have difficulties in having significant interactions with others. My social issues are to the degree a professional has diagnosed me as “socially phobic”. So, while this doesn't interfere with my abilities to work with a computer (designing software, building websites, etc), it does cause a problem in attempting to establish contacts and potential clients. I’d need a “front man” to handle the client interactions while I did the heavy lifting and I don’t have a person like that at the moment, so freelancing is back to being something to contemplate.

I mentioned that I put a hold on looking for software development work. When will I start looking again? I’ll be holding off a few weeks at least. I want to wait and see how a possible living situation change may pan out. I’d rather look for a new place to live with my potential future roommates and move with my current job than to do it just after starting a professional job. However, I suppose if a good offer is presented to me I will consider it.
